AP Chemistry | SCI 740  Department

Prerequisite(s): Biology, Algebra 1 and usually Chemistry (see below)

Fee(s): POGIL packet, AP exam 
*Offered 2026-27 and will likely fall into an every other year rotation based on student interest in the class 

AP Chemistry is typically taken after Chemistry but for motivated students who earned As in Algebra 1 or who are advanced in math AND who complete a summer prep program, AP Chemistry can be taken instead of Chemistry. 

The AP Chemistry course outline defined by the college board and contains nine units of study including 

  • The structure and properties of Atoms, Compounds, and Substances and Mixtures 
  • Kinetics 
  • Thermochemistry 
  • Equilibrium 
  • Acids and bases 
  • Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry 

AP Chemistry is for ambitious students who are willing to spend from one to four hours per week on homework, who are eager to collaborate with their peers, who exhibit self-control around dangerous chemicals, and who are excited to see how the tiniest things we know of are the building blocks of everything we know.
